Grocery Store Groping Rant

March 4th, 2008 at 07:17 am

It seems like every time I go grocery shopping at Publix, I swear them off. I spend a small fortune and cringe as I pay their overinflated prices. For one week of well-planned food, it was $225.00, even with $36.00 in coupon savings. (Keep in mind, I live in outrageously expensive South Florida. Fuel is about $3.50/gallon now and milk is $7.00/gallon.)
"Next time, I'm shopping at Wal-Mart!"

But I can never do it.

Let me EMPHATICALLY say that I am not predjudiced in any way, shape or form. The fact remains, that I live in South Florida and that non-english speaking illegal aliens are the majority. As a relatively young woman, when I go to Wal-Mart, I get cat-called, stared down, 'brushed' against and on one occasion even groped, and this demographic has ALWAYS been the culprit. It terrifies me to go anywhere but my local Publix, especially since I am typically grocery shopping at night and have to make the trek across the 5 football field long parking lot in the dark. Its so frustrating. Even when I bring the hubby, its uncomfortable at best.
I was hoping to find a grocery delivery service, but there isn't one in my area.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

$7.00/gal of milk? Buy a cow and save money.

Change from going at night to as early as they open. Don't go the days or weekends that assistant checks are sent out. Have a list and walk upright with a purpose, same advice as if you were walking at night alone. Of course make DH go with you! Get in and get out!

By the way, gas here is over $3.50 a gallon! Milk, thankfully is still under $5.00 a gallon. I think Northern California, San Francisco Bay Area and Hawaii all go back and forth with the worst gas prices.

I also live in South Florida but we don't pay $7.00 a gallon.

I normally go to three different grocery stores. I go to Publix, Winn Dixie, and Sedano's. I like the local produce at Sedano's. I buy whatever is on sale at the other 2 stores. I go over the sales and my coupons to make my grocery list. My superwalmart is too far away to make it cost effective for me to shop there.

If you shop at Publix, you can request someone to take your grocery cart out. Like you, I'm not crazy about shopping at night unless I'm with another person.

That sounds awful. Other women are experiencing the same thing? Maybe women need to get together and make a public issue of such assaults....I live in the inner city and never feel the least bit fear to go grocery shopping by myself at night (and neither did I when I was a young woman). It just isn't like that here.

Can you shop as soon as they open? Less people, more security, safer parking lots.

my grocery list is $200 for 2 weeks, so that is about $400 every month, sometimes we last a whole 4 wks the last time, but it is a fortune...i know.

Beyond what has already been suggested, I would recommend looking for a Rape Aggression Defense class in your area.

I volunteer my time to teach this class in SoCal. RAD is nationwide and on many college campuses. I see an enormous change in the women who come through the class in terms of confidence and empowerment.

Gas about $3.50/ gallon here in Seattle also.

I don't have any fantastic ideas about your situation. One cheap possibility is to age yourself and make yourself unappealing in a quick and easy way. Wearing a pair of very, very, very low prescription reading glasses might do it...call it the Dorothy Parker solution. Another is to subliminally growl as you walk past. It worked for me when I was 23 ... then again, I've always worn glasses. Wink

It must be a drag going to all those public places alone, and dealing with all that discrimination, you can look at this in a positive matter: learn to stand up for yourself, either that, or get a boyfriend to deal with that.
