Cooking for one.

April 1st, 2008 at 07:56 am

It sucks. Really.

All my favorite dishes are completely impractical for single folk. It makes it so very easy to default to eating junk food or eating out. I wish I had a family of 43,987 to feed.

Which brings me to my child wanting.

I am a family girl. Not a career woman or a party girl. I was born and bred to nurture, love and teach. The child bug has bitten me. Sometimes I wish that I could meet Mr. Right and Mr. Right Jr... Instant family, just add [s]water[/s] love.

But back to cooking for one.. This is my meal plan for the week.

Tonight- Osso Bucco w/ cous cous (scandalously inexpensive for lamb, absurdly easy to make)
Wednesday- Chicken Carbonara
Thursday- Chicken Curry w/ Jasmine Rice
Friday- Steak and pomme frites

Saturday is my birthday, but its looking like I am going to be spending it alone. I'm thinking I am going to take myself out to a nice dinner and maybe buy myself a new pair of shoes. =)

You are still young! And while you want a child, you at least have time on your side to plan for that (if you plan on doing it without a man at some point). Children are priceless and I'm hoping to add to the five I already have - maybe another one or two or three? My best friend is 43 and never married and her biological clock is ticking like a huge booming drum. And she's lowered her standards for a potential mate because she desperately wants a sperm donor, but hasn't planned and can't afford to do it on her own.

You're a cute girl! Don't give up on finding a mate/potential father. Have a good birthday!

Oh yes, I can relate to those sentiments... well, most of them anyway. Big Grin

When I cook, I just cook for 2, but bag up the leftovers for work lunch the next day. So far, it's been working out well enough.

As for the family thing... I guess that's a female impulse. Men have similar impulse maybe, but it's largely directed at large screen TVs, motorcycles, and barbeque grills.... Ok, maybe that's not the same kind of impulses... although there are men who would like a family as well, especially as they age.

Sorry to hear that you have to spend your birthday by yourself. Can you perhaps ask some friends to hang out with you?

On the bright side... um, how do I put this? I really don't think you'll be single for long. Big Grin Not unless you want to be.

There's a cookbook called Taste of Home-Cooking for 1 or 2. Maybe you can ck it out of the library for some ideas.

Your meal plan sounds yummy. I guess you don't make enough for leftovers. I cook and have food for days. Maybe that's why I get bored and always want to eat out. Happy birthday, I hope it's a great one!

okay just a little bit confused because in your other posts, you refer to a "hubby".
    ??

  6. Broken Arrow Says:

Just checked it out, and yes, there IS a mention of a hubby! My bad, thought you were single. Big Grin Is hubby gone for some reason? Otherwise, the two of you can at least go out for dinner or something.

mom-sense, you make your friend sound soooo uh... eligible....

Hi, I can completely sympathize with you! I've always had a large family around, so cooking was always multiple pots & multiple servings of something delicious. Now that I'm on my own, and BF isn't here, it is very hard for me to get motivated to cook anything that takes over 5 minutes in the microwave. Smile
I can also sympathize with the baby deal. I've never been a partier & neither has BF. Lately I've been looking at all the couples that come into my work with babies and getting a tad jealous!

As mom-sense posted earlier though, at least we have time on our side. Smile

I can relate too about the whole cooking for one thing. I'm kind of used to it though. I also tend to just eat out more often than I should. Another problem is if I cook extra to save for another meal like BA mentioned I sometimes eat it all anyways. LOL.

Good luck on finding the right guy and starting your family. I wouldn't rush starting the family too fast though. I just mean that its better to take your time and you are still young.

You could always fedex some leftovers this-a-way...

Ah yes.. the "hubby" has found himself a new road to travel and after a rather tenuous relationship, we've called it quits.

    Such is life.

ok...if a guy is silly enough to give up YOUR cooking for a career...he is just plain loco! lol. (Keep doing what you love...Mr. Right will find you when the time is right...in the meantime, enjoy your journey---

First, let me say that I think it's (sometimes!) better to have children on your own. My "one and only" high tailed it when I told him I was pregnant. Aww, how freakin romantic. When I was talking to a friend of mine (who is 33 and a confirmed bachelor) that the next time I got pregnant, I was using a donor, he looked at me like I had lost my mind. I haven't, promise. I just know, that unless I find Mr. Right (and Mr. Right Jr, so stealing that!) sometime within te next five years, I'm having another on my own. It's completely empowering to raise a child by yourself ... and next time, I just hope I am more financially stable.

Oh, and when you do have children ... be prepared for hotdogs (soy dogs, but don't tell her!), mac n cheese, alfredo noodles, chicken nuggets. I make things like you've listed a couple of nights per week and freeze the leftovers. I make Juliette try them (at least three bites is the new rule, ha!) and what she'll eat I mark on the calendar. I freeze all leftovers so I can have quick, yummy grown up meals when I feel like being nice and letting her eat junk.

    Happy Birthday on Saturday.
You don't need to spend your day alone unless you want to. Stay right here and we will be with you.
